Well, we have reached that year end event, the time in which Indie Vision Music posts their “Best of Lists” for the world to see. 2024 was a tumultuous year and one filled with plenty of heartbreak and tragedy for myself of which I am still recovering from in the form of grief and trauma. As much as there were lows (I’m talking low lows), there were some definite highs and highlights I might say in the form of music. Albums and EPs plastered this year, many of which have entered my year end best of list. Music in and of itself offers much healing and a soothing relief from the worries of the present and pain of the past. I found myself listening to a lot of music both old and NEW. Some of these new albums were monumental releases, definitive 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and so on releases for each respective band and I am going to do my best to highlight these releases to the best of my abilities. So sit back, put on those readers, throw back some ibuprofen for the muscle aches and pains, and refresh your memory for the year 2024. This I present you is my “Best of 2024” List as written by Brandon Jones, owner/founder of this here website. Enjoy!
Best of 2024: Brandon Jones
The following list will be in reverse starting with #30 and descending to #1. Please read to the end and I would love for you all to visit each band’s respective social sites/websites and seek out their music on Digital Streaming Networks, Vinyl, Tapes, Or on CD! Here we go. *This is not a “Christian only” list but heavy on artists exploring their Faith, and a few not so much lol. You’ll know who is who, just listen and find out on your own.

30. The Chilling Alpine Adventure – The Chilling Alpine Adventure (Independent)
The album is a last minute addition and I know that is a little bit unfair considering so many great releases came out in 2024 and this one slid in at the very last minute. This is why it is at #30 and not higher. Well, the point of this list is to highlight great up and coming acts as well as draw attention to those long held classics. These guys straddle the line between a modern up and coming indie act and a classic in the making. This album is driven by piano and electronics but given a boost by deep bass, subtle guitar parts, and thunderous drums. They are more than just a band, they’re an experience. The Chilling Alpine Adventure are a cinematic, moment encased in time through beat and song. There is a beauty in these songs. It’s like latter era Falling Up meets Coldplay, meets Cool Hand Luke, meets Gotye and The Tron Legacy Soundtrack mixed with a little Hans Zimmer for good measure. They were smart to move on from the Falling Up name because this is music on a grand scale and a fresh start. Here’s to 2025!
29. Luxury – Like Unto Lambs [Independent]
Moody and introspective. Luxury will draw you in soft spoken vocals similar to say a Starflyer 59, Fine China, and Radiohead. The band has been together before and after their hiatus probably going on over 30 years now. In fact, the band’s 1995 release “Amazing and Thank You” turn 30 next year, WOW! To come back the past couple years with an impressive album (Trophies) and now “Like Unto Lambs” that far surpass their 90’s efforts really shows you their talent and knack for writing a great song. Age is but a number and in terms of the music Luxury create, you don’t hear age, you hear beautiful notes, melodies, and these vocals that just soar. “Like Unto Lambs” is the band’s finest work and my favorite of theirs.
28. Carly Ann Taylor – Changing My Story EP [Independent]
I discovered Carly’s music toward the later part of this year mostly because of the band Hopeful. who shared her songs. She is a young singer/songwriter with definite talent for what she does. Her voice soars and you can tell vocal manipulation is definitely not being used here, just strong, natural vocal power. Her music fits somewhere between past and present. A combo of sounds from artists like Michelle Branch, Crystal Lewis, Vanessa Carlton, Britt Nicole, and the strength of a vocalist like Lauren Daigle, can be found in Carly’s music. Songs like “Saved My Soul”, “Your Beauty”, and the track “Here I Am” feat. Hopeful., are some of my favorites. This is just an all around uplifting piece of work that’ll lift the mood and the spirit. Give it a listen.
27. Stretch Arm Strong – The Revealing [Iodine Recordings]
This is classic, fast paced, heavy, IN YOUR FACE, Stretch Arm Strong but on a modern 2024 level. These 6 songs are proof that a band who leaves us for almost 2 decades can come back like no time had passed at all. Talent is talent. “Illuminating”, “Aspirations”, and “Still Believe, Part III” “A Revealing”, are some of my favorites but they’re all good, especially the track with Sick of It All.
26. Spoken in Tongues – Awkward Future [Independent]
This band has a legendary pedigree but forget that for a moment and just take in all the songs on the EP, not knowing who’s performing on it. The songs have a certain 90’s indie/pop-punk vibe mixed with their own unique take and it comes up entirely original. Bill’s vocals truly carry this group and bring on that aforementioned originality and that puts them in a league all their own. There are 5 tracks on this EP and I am thankful that I own the vinyl version, really magnificent stuff. “Jackie”, “Date Night”, “Somewhere Else”, are some of my favorites but they are all great.
25. Sower – The Seed EP [Independent]
Years ago we hosted a download of a short little ep by The Sower & The Soils and when I found out Eric was going to continue making new music as “Sower”, I got really excited. Eric is a really talented fellow as is evidenced in his past work with Curbsquirrels and other likeminded groups. These 4 songs are biblically based, like pulled directly from pages of our most closely treasured Holy Bible. He calls this Biblical Indie Rock and it’s for good reason. These songs are so well done and share an important message that can appear to all ages and types of people. The four songs tell the story of a person going from unbelief toward processing their belief and questioning, to becoming a believer in Christ and following the Lord. From unbelief to belief.
24. Valley of Doves – The Long Arm of Light [Fair Vaux Records]
This moody, almost goth feel, with a post-hardcore touch album by a newer band Valley Of Doves, is a really great debut. Fair Vaux Records is on a roll with some amazing new acts they’ve added. One of the best new labels out there right now beside Small Step Records of course. This moody, introspective, inspired, and spiritually moving new record surprised me. Another smaller act that you should never discount or count out because you haven’t heard them before. The whole point of music discovery is to listen to something new (with headphones preferably), give it a fair shot, then hit replay. In the case of Valley of Doves, I hit replay and enjoyed this record for the amazing beauty it is.
23. Red Weather – All We Have Is Time [Independent]
I’ve known of these guys for a few years and once the new tunes started dropping the past year, I knew we were in for something truly special. I wasn’t wrong. They are in the vein of Emo-Pop-Punk and incredibly talented for an independent band. The sound on this new EP just sounds so cohesive, super poppy, and melodically addictive. These songs will get stuck in your head guaranteed. I definitely recommend Red Weather and there is a reason they ended up on my year end list – THIS EP! For fans of Mayday Parade, Blink-182, Taking Back Sunday, The Dangerous Summer.
22. Lightworker – How The Beautiful Decay [Solid State]
In heavy music as a whole, Lightworker hold their own and really far exceed so many of today’s modern heavy metal bands. They have that “core” slight touch to their music but with the soaring vocals, the brooding and menacing sound, and a dead serious delivery found on “How The Beautiful Decay”, this is a heavy metal band through and through. I hate using comparisons because it pins a band to a particular style and scene but Joe’s vocals bring to mind the best Howard Jones era Killswitch Engage which for me was a powerful sound, and some of it reminds me of As I Lay Dying’s best moments but so much better than that. Joe Calderon holds his own as a very talented lead vocalist/screamer and he does both extremely well. Lightworker are balancing between scenes and styles, carrying their own flag of originality without copping anyone’s sound. These guys are legit and on this second Solid State Records full length, we find them at their absolute best, with a strong offering of sound. “Mea Culpa” absolute crushes it!
21. Spoken – Reflection [XOVR Records]
This is a new Spoken record and I went in knowing exactly what to expect. Spoken have a signature sound even if different members have played in the band over the years. Matt Baird has a specific sound he wants to play for his band and is a prolific songwriter himself. This album is a bit heavier than the past 2 records but still has that signature voice and singing parts/screaming by Matt. “Reflection” is a great album but would I like to see more stuff like “A Moment of Imperfect Clarity”, “Last Chance To Breathe”, “Self Titled”? Well yes but we can’t all live in the past now can we. “In The Dark” is a great song as are songs like “Buried”, “Let The War Begin”, “Never Look Away”, “Future”, and “Anymore” feat. Brian Head Welch of Korn. This might sound weird but in another universe I could have seen Matt as the new vocalist for Linkin Park and I know that never would have happened for various reasons but he would have fit perfectly.
20. Teeth For Eyes – Mines Along The Strand [The Charon Collective]
From the moments I heard some early tracks (thank you Greg) from this project over a year ago, I just knew this would be a unique and special band for my ears to consume. There is no easy to explain the music of Teeth For Eyes and I can’t really compare them to anyone else. They are the perfect intersection between Punk and Rock n Roll. The crunchy sounding guitars harken back to Crux’s finest moments (Mike and Greg are both from that band) and vibe so well with the bass and drum tracks. It’s like a giant cohesive ball of sound that’ll envelope your whole body and having you head bobbing in no time. The vocals really make this project special and that snarl while giving them a gritty take isn’t so much muddied in sound that you can’t decipher what he’s singing which I find really cool. This whole album is a really special package of songs. All 10 tracks fit together smoothly and you’ll find yourself a fan in no time, just give these guys a listen today.
19. Gileah Taylor – Slow Parade [Velvet Blue Music]
Oh my gosh, the beauty in her songs and her vocals period, transports you somewhere otherworldly. It’s like the combination of sounds found on albums from Sixpence None The Richer, Sarah McLachlan, Mazzy Star, and Stevie Nicks. Really gorgeous music. This is one of those albums you have to listen to completely, I mean the whole thing. Velvet Blue Music really put out some amazing releases this year and Gileah Taylor’s is certainly no exception. The sway and swoon of the americana meets folk rock music is surely something special to behold. Don’t pass this one up.
18. Benjamin Daniel – “The Rain Falls Sideways” [Independent]
Quietly introspective and dramatically honest. Benjamin Daniel creates beautifully inspiring music mostly with just his piano and acoustic guitar. It’s laid back in feel and yet motivating with a driving, spiritual center meant to inspire. That’s what these songs do for me, they inspire and give a glimpse of hope through sounds and words. More people need to discover Benjamin’s songs so if you haven’t yet, you know what to do. These 11 songs (almost an hour in length) will lead you to contemplation and feelings of emotion. Check out the title track in music video format, below. It’s an emotional one.
17. Vivid Era – Still Here [Independent]
This synth, electronic driven pop music is one of pure joy and sonic wonder. These synth-pop songs are so dang catchy that you can’t help but feel led into singing along. I am so glad he emailed me months ago to share his music with me and I’ve been a fan ever since. These 4 songs (and 1 remix of “Wildfire”). Similar in style to Owl City, The Jellyrox, maybe a little Calvin Harris and New Order. It’s unique enough to keep Vivid Era in a league all their own. I found myself really enjoying these songs.
16. Max McNown – Wandering (Love Me Back) [Fugitive Recordings]
I discovered this artist through UnoriginalVinyl and Brandon Ebel sharing his songs and I’m so glad they did. It’s a little different than the typical IVM aggressive sounds we share and borders on the new school Country thing but he is different enough that he stands out. Max McNown is a young americana-folk-country singer/songwriter who has exploded on the scene with his 2024 hit record, “Wandering (Love Me Back)”. The songs are as catchy as anything you hear on modern country radio with a fresh take on a somewhat stale genre. His songs are ripe with heartbreak, sorrow, lost love, and somehow finding strength through the pain. If you don’t know who Max McNown is, 2025 will be the year he explodes in popularity with a new album scheduled for a January release. Oh, and hi Ethan Luck.
15. Feeble Attempt – Absolute Trash / Jaded [Independent]
This little melodic punk rock project (duo) featuring a member of Means, just jumped literally out of nowhere. I heard some early samples and then once they dropped teasers with all the various guest vocalists, I was literally PUMPED to hear the finished album “Absolute Trash”. The guest vocalists is what makes the project unique because while each song is rooted in melodic pop-punk and easycore, the songs are all different from one another. It’s a truly unique listening experience. I mean we’ve got Adam from Home Grown (and Radical Radical), Josh From Dogwood, Peter from Over It, Kyle from Gametime, and so many more. The only disappointing thing is that these songs are so short! lol. The band followed up Absolute Trash with “Jaded”, a 3 song EP released this month. So we got 2 awesome releases from Feeble Attempt in just one year! The EP features Loner Youth on vocals and takes on an almost old Swellers meets Four Year Strong and Wonder Years type sound. Really great stuff and guess what? The songs are slightly longer! PTL!
14. The Rocky Valentines – Erase [Tooth & Nail Records]
The fuzz bomb drop of this debut full length from The Rocky Valentines fits somewhere between the 90’s and today’s current music climate. The 90’s are in high demand these days and Charlie’s take on catchy fuzzed out indie rock songs is truly something special. I’ve been following The Rocky Valentines since the very first tracks were released and plus, the Father/Song connection certainly doesn’t hurt now does it? Charlie Martin is very talented in his own right as is evidenced on “Erase” and this first step out on his own proves he’s got the skills to back up the hype. I really enjoyed this record (I literally have the record, like literally!) and his approach to songwriting will only get better from here on out so to sound this good on a debut really shows God given gifts can’t be faked. Definitely, please, give The Rocky Valentines a listen and spread the word.
13. Homeplate – Thanks For Visiting [Small Step Records]
Holy crap this hits hard, real hard! Heavy, melodic, pop-punk with that easycore vibe. Sum 41 meets Four Year Strong meets Hawk Nelson meets Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! The album explodes right out of the gate with “No Inheritance” with it’s heavy hardcore rhythms and pop-punk vocals by David. The release is more EP and less of an album but don’t discount the band based on that fact because these songs hit heavy in the chest, both lyrically and musically. Songs filled with intense amount of honesty, brokenness, redemption, and ultimately, love. Homeplate are truth tellers and leaders in sharing the gospel through song but this isn’t derivative CCM stuff, nope, far from it. What started out as a little indie project has blossomed into a well seasoned act with songs that rise way above the mediocre. They soar in songwriting and catchy melodies. This is heavy stuff musically and lyrically. If you haven’t heard Homeplate before, then give them a listen right now. “Thanks For Visiting” is the kind of pop-punk album that takes the genre in a far more aggressive direction yet still comprised with plenty of melodies. I feel as though this is the band’s best work thus far!
12. Convictions – The Fear of God [Independent]
Heavy rage, melodic singing parts, subtle electronic elements, metalcore with perfect blend of heaviness and righteous anger. “The Fear of God” is one of those rare, special independent releases that sound almost major label quality. These guys have been playing the hype game heavy the past few years and are getting noticed by just about everyone. The fact that they can stay (want to stay?) independent is proof that the inner diy spirit is alive and well in their hearts. The first official song “Sleeping Lotus” is just about the perfect blend of heaviness and melodies. These guys are heavy in perfect timing with the singing parts and it really separates them from some of the other likeminded artists doing their own thing. “The Fear of God” is an attractive set of songs with not just beauty in heavy sounds but a lyric output that will put Christian metalcore back on the map. I know a lot of bands don’t like that term but when describing the scene as a whole this is the kind of band you want representing you. So many great heavy releases this year and this is certainly one of the bright spots.
11.Names Without Numbers – We Create Reality [Fair Vaux Records]
I thought their previous singles (and the compilation EP of them) plus “Silos & Smokestacks” were the absolute strongest material the band had ever written and of all the indie/emo bands, they ranked up there right next to the greats like Jimmy Eat World, Anberlin, Taking Back Sunday, Juliana Theory, Further Seems Forever, Dashboard Confessional, etc. but this EP was even more powerful. The lyrics, the music, the songwriting, it’s definitely a step up from the past and in a modern sense, rises above the mundane, regurtitated boredom, and keeps your interest over the length of these 5 songs. I’ve been a fan since I first heard them back in the early 00’s and once they got back together I just couldn’t resist working with them for that short period of time. Watching them excel beyond the IVM umbrella to reach greatness, brings warmness to my heart. They are deserving of every bit of success coming to them and still to come in the immediate future. If you haven’t had a chance to hear this band yet, change that and give them a play. I all 5 songs so choosing a favorite is near impossible. Kudos, guys!
10. The Calamatix – The Calamatix [Hellcat]
From the moment I heard their first couple of singles leading up to the debut, I just knew this was going to be something beautifully unique. This ska/rocksteady/punk record just sounds GOOD, an excellent take on the genre and adding their own take to keep the sound fresh. Her voice is so fresh and smooth, she was built to lead this band and this sound suits Raylin Joy’s style to perfection. These songs are just so happy sounding and it’s the perfect sound for summertime or those cold winter months you WISH were summer. “Love, Lies, and Alibis” is one of my favorites on this record along with “Rootstyle”, and “Still Rudy”. The band are currently on Tim Armstrong’s (Rancid) label, Hellcat Records and kudos to him for keeping it real by pushing original sounds.
9. Dr.No – The Bank [Independent]
Another incredibly talented ska/punk act keeping it real and bringing back that classic sound so many have been hungry for since the scene sort of died out (in populuar/mainstream terms). These guys came out of nowhere and I really only found out about them through UnoriginalVinyl (thank you). These guys are so freaking good and sounding tight as musicians, like a well seasoned band of professionals not a small independent band no one’s heard of. If I didn’t know any better, I’d swear this was a major label release. Their sound is in the vein of The Hippos, Planet Smashers, Five Iron Frenzy, Less Than Jake, and even some Reel Big Fish. The vocalist has a voice built for this music and his vocals carry this record. The other instrumentation and especially horn section is some of the best you’ll hear all year. “One More Time”, and “Not Sorry” are my favorites on this record. All of it is extremely great music and deserving of a listen from fans of the genre and even non ska fans. Enough great sounds to go around for everyone!
8. Less Than Jake – Uncharted [Pure Noise]
Right out of the gates I could tell this was going to be a Less Than Jake record I’d enjoy. I listened to every single from this record months before release and was stoked for it’s release. It’s funny to talking about indie and hardcore music than jump into a ska-punk record but hey, that’s my diverse listening habits. The next 3 releases are going to continue this trend 😉 “Broken Words” really gets this album going and is catchy as all get out, even with it’s naughty words (lol). “Walking Pipebomb” carries that ska flag throughout then gets bombed by their famous punk rock sound. “Not My Problem” and the closer, “Shake Loose The Truth” are my absolute favorites from “Uncharted”. Overall, this record is not the band’s best work, oh no, because all their work has a very similar feel with each and every release adding to the classic sound of this band, building upon exceptional songwriting. Their melodies and harmonies along with their punk rock vein running throughout every song is keeps this band apart from the rest and gives them a unique take. I just love LTJ and this release is certainly no exception to the exceptional sounds found on “Uncharted”.
7. TAKE – Time Bomb [Resuscitation Records]
These guys have an original sound and an interesting take (no pun intended) on the Hardcore genre as a whole. I know they’ve been doing this for a number of years but broke up some point a decade ago and have been storming gates, taking names, and blasting the scene with a bombastic, heavy sound. It’s not all heavy though because this band incorporates melodies and singing parts. In hardcore? Yep, they’ve done it and done it well not to mention guitar solos! This is really interesting stuff and that lead single “Heaven or Hell” really set the stage for what was to come. “Take Me Back” is an explosive song that also appeared on “Fighting From The Ground Up Vol 4” released through Indie Vision Music a month ago. Their version of the NIN classic “Head Like A Hole” is tastefully done and not only a tip of the hat to NIN but a whole new feel for a classic. These guys remind me of a cross between The Warriors, Comeback Kid, As I Lay Dying, and Haste The Day. Angry music for those searching for Love and meaning in life, eyes focused above. It’s a really diverse sound and yet so stinkin’ good. An incredible collection of songs that’ll have you singing along and throwing yourself on your knees to worship God. Amazing stuff guys, thank you.
6. My Epic – Loriella [Tooth & Nail Records]
Where do I begin? I’ve known these guys collectively as a band since about 2005 and their debut EP “This is Rescue”. Heck, at one time they were an Indie Vision Music band if for just mere minutes (they didn’t actually release an album on the label) and I was so blessed to hear they signed with Dreamt (later Facedown) because that was an amazing natural step in the right direction. Fast FWD almost 2 two decades and we have this year’s new album “Loriella” which is quite simply a masterpiece in sound and songwriting. This record has the band’s finest elements, sonic heaviness, Aaron’s smooth melodic singing voice with beautifully intertwined vocals that waver through waves of passion, and tearful emotion. I am drawn to these songs just like their many past collective works as a band. “Loriella” shows a band at the top of their game and worthy of unconditional praise. “Wildflowers”, “Northstar”, “In The Air”, “High Color”, and the lead single “Heavy Heart”. That fuzz bomb sound of “Heavy Heart” really carries this record and it’s family centric lyrical focus is just a beautiful representation of a father/husband who cares for his family with every ounce of his heart. I kinda wish “Heavy Heart” would have been track 1 because it would have been a fantastic opener rather than the closer. Either way, “Loriella” is a fine representation of My Epic as a well-seasoned band with something significant to say. Make sure to also give their “Loriella: The Film” a watch and listen to the live renditions of songs off this record, available now through all digital streaming services.
5. Orion Walsh – Walking Through The Forest [Fair Vaux Records]
Orion Walsh has been creating music for more than two decades now between band stuff (Three For Flinching, Slow Coming Day) and his vast solo work. In fact, he has been a solo artist longer than any of his band’s works. His music is full of that folk and americana feel with a very slight, subtle old school country influence. This year’s release “Walking Through The Forest” is in my mind, one of his absolute best works as an artist. All 8 songs are different enough that you can find yourself singing a long and refraining from pushing that skip button. No filler to be found on this release and these original songs leave you thirsting for more upon the ending notes of the acoustic version of “Melt With The Snow” which originally appeared on his Solo debut “Tornado Lullabies” back in 2008 (I still remember selling that release in the IVM store years ago). While we’re not getting any younger it’s music like this that inspires a flooding of youth upon us. Some of my favorites from this release besides saying all of them is “Home To You”, “Last Halloween”, “Walking Through The Forest”, “Just Friends”, “Concrete Maze”, and of course my favorite rendition of “Melt With The Snow” in acoustic form. Who am I kidding, every song is a trip through sonic wonderment and notes of pure joy. There isn’t anything i’d ask him to change about his songwriting and compositions. He is a pro by now and these songs are proof of that skill. Beautifully moving songs that show heartbreak, vulnerability, and honesty. Passionate Americana that’ll bless you with emotion.
4. Too Bad Eugene – Battle Scars [People of Punk Rock Records]
Well, what can I say about this band that I haven’t said before? I am sure it is common knowledge by now that I’m a big fan of Too Bad Eugene and the music they create. This 14 track album released right at my anniversary date (one day after) and in a month that would become the worst time of my life. I began 2024 with spinning the band’s single “Shaking My Fist at Clouds” one of their strongest songs to date and a favorite of mine still. It is filled with just that perfect amount of witty sarcasm and humor about growing old and telling the kids to get off your lawn. The album is a wild rollercoaster of sounds and lyrics that take you all over the map. For a punk rock band, Too Bad Eugene are without a doubt strong songwriters and Adam’s lyrics are truly some deep stuff not to mention keeping one engaged through all 14 tracks and offering the listener some subject matter that’ll have them thinking. I have so many favorites on this record and it’s hard to narrow down a particular 1 but I do feel connected with “Sick” from a personal standpoint, the track with Adam’s daughter Mercy Nigh, “Astronomical” is really a beautiful piece of work. “Growing Young” with Adam’s wife, Rachel, is also a really beautifully inspired track that will make all couples tear up and in my case, weep. All the songs here have their moments and not one stands out as a dud at all. Even the last song is beautifully written & composed and the soaring vocal harmonies toward the end really drives that beauty home. “Battle Scars” has appeared to be the band’s most successful work so far and will certainly not be their last as they are currently working on their follow up record to be released next year. Just when I thought the first 4 releases were perfect, I think we are in for a real treat on the next several in the coming years. It’s never too late to pursue your dreams and compose music that people connect with on a deeper level. Of all the bands in the punk rock realm, Too Bad Eugene have a unique and interesting take on Faith and Punk Rock. I haven’t found too many bands exactly like them out there and for that, this new album ranks high up on my 2024 list!
3. No Treaty – Sound The Trumpet [Independent]
OH.MY.GOSH. If there was any heavy band deserving of a trophy, it’s these guys. MVPs of 2024 hardcore! I had heard a single or two over the course of a few months while assembling my “Fighting From The Ground Up Vol. 4” compilation and kept hearing the name NO TREATY brought up. Not sure how I stumbled upon the first single I heard but it may have been a recommended page to me on the IVM Instagram account and I am sure KINGDOM.CORE and FOR.THE.ROCK also posted about these guys heavily this year. To hear a debut like “Sound The Trumpet” from an independent band and have it sound THIS GOOD just goes to show you that label hype and promotion isn’t always needed because good music will be found eventually and word spreads like wildfire round these parts. Sound The Trumpet is every bit as heavy and melodic that you can get in the realm of hardcore music which isn’t always known for being “melodic”. The band I keep going back to when looking for a similar sound would be Hands, or maybe For Today, Sleeping Giant, even Knocked Loose. Why that last one? Well, they are without a doubt the biggest hardcore band right now in terms of crowd sizes and album sales. No Treaty thankfully takes a more Christ-centered, loving approach to their music and the way it’s composed. More righteous anger, anger from the heart with a focus on sharing the Gospel through hardcore music. There is much Gospel and biblically inspired lyricism on this EP. I would encourage all of you to give these guys a listen and pick up the vinyl from Resuscitation Records while it is still available (I’m sure it won’t be for long). The title track and “Deep” are two of my absolute favorites but they all fit just perfect on this 5 song EP where you can listen in entirety without getting bored. “Sound The Trumpet” is a boredom free release, hands down.
2. Light The Way – Expel [Small Step Records]
How do I sum up into words the feelings and experience I felt listening to this record for the first time? I know this album came out late in the year, just a month ago to be exact but time is no gatekeeper for when and where a person shall enjoy a particular album. I love this band not out of duty or loyalty to a group of friends they have become, I love them first and foremost for their music, their lyrics, their delivery, and yes, for their hearts. I have met a lot of band members over the years whether that be in person, through email and web correspondence, or through social media and these guys are the real deal. They are humorous, fun to talk to, and their music wildly entertaining not to mention spiritually triggering (in a good way). “Expel” just like the album below you’re going to read about in a few moments, moved me and engaged me to the point that I was singing along with tears in my eyes and a heavy pull at the heart. What some might call “Pop Punk”, I call it a dose of spiritual medication to soothe even the most broken hearted warrior. I really think 2024 was a rediscovery for me, a chance to refocus my energies on what’s most important and finding a certain normalcy in what I’ve done in music. A chance to reconnect with what most excited me to begin with when I first launched Indie Vision Music 24 years ago. Songs on this album range from the sly, witty, humorous fun the band has a knack for to the more serious, worshipful, and heart tugging emotional songs that have purpose. Songs like “Waterwalker”, “Dude, Jesus Loves You”, “As If You Could Outrun Me”, “Lazy Bones”, “Depth Charge”, “Hollow Tree”, “In Memoriam”, etc. really show a band spreading their wings and flying to their own accord, charting their own path and doing things their own way. I respect Light The Way for not bowing to pressure or selling out who they are as Christians and believers. That song “Wildfire” they did with the Deathbreaker vocalist was really groundbreaking for Light The Way in regards to their past sound. They went out on a limb and tried something they hadn’t really done which was make a hardcore song, well one like I mean. “False Memory Syndrome” had a track that experimented with that sound and there were traces on other releases as well but this was the first full on, in your face, heavy hardcore-esque song with a guest vocalist from fellow Facedown Records band, Deathbreaker. It’s heavy and great at the same time. I think of all the songs on this record, “Waterwalker” hits me the hardest. It is just such a heavy hitting, melodic, emotional song with a really deep message. If you haven’t experienced “Expel” by Light The Way yet then do yourself a favor and take a listen on digital networks or the band’s bandcamp page and purchase a vinyl or CD, you wont be sorry you did.
1. Starflyer 59 – Lust For Gold [Velvet Blue Music]
I didn’t know quite what to expect with this release but at the same with the music of Starflyer 59 you kinda know what’s coming. This album completely floored me and took me by surprise. I was transported to a place in the not so distant past, a place filled with magic and wonderment, of nostalgia as rich as gold. I am completely absorbed into Starflyer 59 with “Lust For Gold” and I am telling you right now, every single song should be listened to in order of appearance and not skipped or ffwd through at any time. There is beauty in these songs and while the lyrics may appear simple at first glance, they are deeper than one can imagine with when pinned to these songs. “1995”, “YZ80”, “909”, and “Everyone Seems Strange” are certainly my “Favorites” but they in no way should lessen the impact of the entire album as a whole. Every single one of these 8 songs is a brilliant piece of music composed by a legend (and his fellow crew) in his own right, Mr. Jason Martin. There have been 17 albums from SF59 over the course of 30 years and that my friends is quite an accomplishment. Anyone deservining of a “trophy” in today’s Christian Music Industry shouldn’t be the artists composing derivative, over used and stereotypical woship songs but rather a true pioneer in sound and songwriting. Starflyer 59 in my dream world would be given something of an Honorary Legends Award for all the past contributions to our music scene and the world at large. I know that wont happen because the powers that be are too focused on what’s “NEW” and not what’s ground breaking. Thank you Jason for still creating lovely music that us fans can appreciate and give us repreieve from life’s struggles and pain that bubbles just beneath the surface. If we can numb that pain even just for a moment with the healing sounds of music in the form of “Lust For Gold” then God Bless Starflyer 59 and God Bless Velvet Blue Music for caring enough to continue putting out quality music. “1995” brough me to tears and still does. I think in part they are happy, joyous tears, reminding me of a simpler time, a time in which I’m still holding hands with my wife to be and passing her Starflyer 59 albums like “Gold”. She really enjoyed those songs and was pleased when I would share with her. Of all the artists back in the mid 90’s that I would share with her, she loved Starflyer 59 best even though we had unforgettable memories with OC Supertones, MxPx, and Plankeye. Thank you for your time Mr. Martin and thank you for the nostalgia.
Best Remix/Re-Release Album:
Model Engine – The Lean Years Tradition
I just love this album and everything about it. The songwriting, the lyrical depth, the melodies and song structures, everything about “The Lean Years Tradition” should have equaled mainstream success and garnered millions of fans across the globe. While they do have a fanbase (heck I’m still one of them), the mainstream level of success didn’t exactly transpire with the release of this now classic album, in 1997. Fast forward almost 30 years and we got a special re-release of this critically acclaimed 2nd full length for the band formerly known as Black Eyed Sceva. This remix was done by the great Jim Scott and sounds true to the original sounds just crisper, deeper, and stronger? This is just my excuse to talk about the greatness that was Model Engine and the remix is the reason for their inclusion on my year end best of list for 2024. This album has never sounded better as it does with this remix. Now let’s hope Jeremy and the boys re-release “Way Before The Flood” and “5 Years, 50,000 Miles Davis” soon. A vinyl of any of the 2 full lengths would be absolutely amazing and I’d buy that on day 1 of pre-order. Give The Lean Years Tradition a play after you read this list and let us know what you think.
Farewell Tribute:
2Minute Minor – Self-Titled and Self-Reflection [Independent]
This is my favorite 2Minute Minor release and their best one yet, it’s just a bummer that this is also the band’s final album. The songs sound bigger and better, with production sounding well balanced and the vocals are definitely up front, crisp, and clear. It’s loud, heavy, angry, and in your face. Aggressive when absolutely necessary and perfect in this context. 8 songs and 20 minutes long. “DIY and hardcore to the end” and that is how I’ll always remember them. Any and all hardcore fans should definitely give this album a listen.

So cool you have Dr no in here I’ve known Josh since the late 90s when they were part of the amazing scene we had in Colorado Springs. He also put out an amazing cd under the band name faster Avenue. Bad recording but amazing songs
