Interesting to hear this. I’m not sure how much I care for it but it’s certainly hard to categorize! I wouldn’t call this doom metal although at some points it is certainly slow and incredibly heavy. I think their own label on bandcamp of black metal is interesting too. Yes the high pitch screaming is “black” and there are some regular rough attempts at a sort of blast beat with tremelo picking but this is even less “black” than Underoath “Cries of the Past” which wasn’t black metal either. I went with the doom metal descriptor partially because that was a tag the band used and I thought it would be more accepted than calling it “black metal” due to some connotations therein. I’m not a huge expert on this genre nor is it really my go-to thing, but I happen to be connected to some of those guys. I appreciate your input here as you’re more invested in this type of music. There’s definitely traces of post-metal here and there.
My comment wasn’t really worth that much, just kind of thinking out loud. I just didn’t know what to expect since I wasn’t familiar with the band or former bands’ material. When I saw doom (which again, how do you categorize this?) I was super curious. It has a lot going on and doom is certainly an element of what they do. That first track holds that up very well. For some reason they remind me of Jon Maheswaran’s (ex- As Bold As Lions) band Halcyon.
It also features former members of Idealist and Arms Length Away.
