Adventures of The O.C. Supertones

A heartfelt reflection on those early years and the album that started it all
My journey with The O.C. Supertones is a long, winding path of music and memories that bring me back to a time I’ll always cherish. It’s more than just nostalgia it’s a reminder of the days my late wife, Charis, and I spent together, bound by the energy of ska and punk, wrapped in the lyrics that spoke to our faith. Those shows, those songs they weren’t just something we listened to; they became part of who we were.
Our story together starts, in part, with The Supertones. We were just teenagers back in 1996, diving headfirst into the Southern California music scene. Those were the days of weekend shows and jam packed venues, skankin’ to the beat, yelling “Oi Oi Oi” at the top of our lungs, hands raised in a powerful mix of joy and reverence. We weren’t just dancing and singing; we were praising, finding a rhythm that matched our passion for God and each other. The songs made us feel unstoppable, like we could take on the world together, and with every upbeat and guitar riff, we felt even closer.
When we went to those shows, the atmosphere was electric a surge of hope, laughter, and community. The room would swell with an energy that was unmistakable and contagious. Charis and I would lock eyes in the middle of the crowd, lost in the music yet completely present with each other. We felt like we were part of something bigger than ourselves, something powerful and deeply rooted in Faith. Every chord seemed to hum with purpose, and every lyric was a reminder of who we wanted to be and who we already were in Christ.
If I could have one more show with her, just one more night to dance together, I know that feeling of completeness would wash over me again, like a warm embrace. There’s something deeply special about praising with ska and punk it’s raw, real, and unapologetic, just like our love and just like our Faith. And though I can’t have that time back, I like to think she’s up there, smiling, dancing along, singing every word and nodding with that ever recognizable “Oi Oi Oi”. I imagine her lipping, “Where you from? Orange County!” as the band plays on, with us forever connected by the music, the memories, and the Faith that continues to carry me.
