I have been privileged enough that I get to give the new Young Oceans record a listen. The album titled “Suddenly (Or The Nuclear Sunburst of the Truth Revealed)”, is a haunting trip through new wave instrumentation and worship centered musical adventure. The songs which remind me somewhat of a melting of styles, imagine The Killers meets The Decemberists and Death Cab For Cutie meets Cool Hand Luke at an intersection with the passing of Rend Collective. The weirdest comparison I can make is that I even hear a sliver of Chris Isaac. They have a unique take on a tired genre that people have created called “Indie Worship”. The group effectively breathe new life into the purpose and mission so many “Christian” artists try to create which is an atmosphere that causes people to contemplate and reflect on issues of Faith. Young Oceans aren’t afraid to explore new territory with their songs. It’ll be interesting to see if this album sticks and has that staying power so many albums lack. It has a commercial appeal in a non traditional sense. In “Christian” circles this kind of music isn’t fully embraced by radio but in terms of the general marketplace, this kind of music instantly draws people in. The grand scale and epic nature of these songs as a whole make it difficult for me to just pick and choose which ones are “favorites”. I encourage you all to seek out this project when it is released and listen in your special quiet place. Prepare to be captivated. Young Oceans “Suddenly (Or The Nuclear Sunburst of The Truth Revealed” releasing October 20th.
