When I heard MxPx was set to release a Christmas album, I have to admit, I was pretty excited. I wondered what the beloved punk rockers would bring us with their Christmas offering. As it turns out, you PxPx fan club members get one Christmas song from MxPx each year so you are probably familiar with much of this material. The album contains their Christmas singles from 1998 when they first started releasing Christmas singles to last year’s Christmas single plus two newly recorded tracks. The result: a great punk rock Christmas album.
It’s great that MxPx can do this for their fans, especially the ones like me who don’t get their yearly Christmas singles. The album is sure a treat and is also very fun. Their opening song, the title track opens the album and sets the pace for the other material. “Christmas Day”, originally releases in ’98’ has a very “modern” punk sound to it and is hard to believe that it is 11 years old. How MxPx does it and did it, we’ll never know, but it appears that they were ahead of their time
The song “Coming Home For Christmas ” is a personal favorite, but about midway through, just goes all out instrumental in calming bells. A more fun punk rocker is found in “Christmas Party”, which is about Christmas parties. The more quirky Christmas song, “Christmas Night of The Living Dead”, definitely comes as a surprise. It is pretty unique and is about fighting the “living dead”. The song “So This Is Christmas?” is basically the question we al ask when it doesn’t feel like Christmas.
“”It’s Christmas and I’m Sick” is a song that seems fitting for a lot of people I know lately, which many have gotten sick. I’m pretty sure no one really gets addicted to cold medicine though, but it’s obviously played for laughs. The next track, “2005” is related to what happened with MxPx in 2005. The fun song “Late Great Snowball Fight of 2006” opens with a cool vintage electronic sounding “Jingle Bells” tune, then goes into talking about snowball fights.
The last few tracks end the album great, and are the most recent songs from 2007-2009. “Gimme Christmas” is just saying what MxPx wanted for Christmas I’m guessing, even asking for the Seahawks to win the Super Bowl, obviously from MxPx being from Washington. “Another Song About Christmas” is essentially that, another song about Christmas. The album ends with the more New Year traditional song “Auld Lang Syne”, which is short, but packs the punk rock in their for sure!
Overall:
MxPx releases a great Christmas CD as a present to fans, featuring 14 punk rawk filled songs! Ranging from their Christmas singles that started being released to PxPx members back in ’98’, this is a Christmas CD that you will love! Merry Punk Rawk Christmas!
