The Running Back is a worship band out of Nashville, but their music sounds so little like U2 that I didn’t even realize they were a worship band until my fourth or fifth time through the EP. I thought they were an alternative rock band, sometimes a little electronic or spacey but usually fun and rocking like Number One Gun or Future of Forestry. Later tracks like “Blinded” and “Love Has Found a Way” take a turn towards indie rock complexity, akin to The Appleseed Cast or even The Shins, especially vocally. Lyrically, these songs emphasize finding everything in God, including forgiveness and healing (“Wait! Go Back!”) and life-inspiring love (“Moonlight”).
Overall: With very tight music and well-crafted songs, The Running Back bring worship that will appeal to fans of alternative and indie rock without sounding like the same old songs over and over.
