I have to start this off by saying xDeathstarx’s 2007 debut on Facedown, titled “We Are The Threat“, has been one of my favorite discs from the label in recent years. It’s been played on a regular basis since I received the disc. So when I heard that they were putting out another album I was pumped! But, to my disappointment I read on to realize that Facedown would simply be re-releasing the band’s 2004 full length from Life Sentence Records. It would be repackaged along with being remixed and remastered, which is a plus, but it’s still old material.
After listening to the disc, I wished that the label had just had the band go back and re-record the album. There’s only so much you can do with remixing and remastering and it shows here. It’s obviously not the worst recording but is certainly a step back from “We Are The Threat“. Regardless, the album is full of the relentless, thundering hardcore that the band is known for and will undoubtedly have you bobbing your head along as you listen. xDeathstarx just has this groove embedded in their sound that pulls you in. The riffs are there, the breakdowns are there, and the ferocity is there. By listening to this album you can also see where the band improved on their Facedown debut and corrected any weak points that show on this release.
Overall: While an enjoyable disc it still is hurt by the fact that it’s old material and the production is sub-par. However, it is an excellent pick up for fans of the band because it will give them a bunch more tracks to listen to. The last I knew the band was working on new material so I’m still waiting for a new disc with all new tracks.
