REVIEW : Hrada - Mirrorland

This is a very unusual release, and I mean that in the best way possible. If you don’t know, Hrada is the brainchild of Peter Espevoll, formerly of Extol. So Hrada sounds like Extol, right? Not at all. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. Well, kind of. Do we have excellent instrumentation, exquisite arrangements, and segues that make your head spin a little? Sure. The two projects have that in common. On Mirrorland, there are also themes of faith, doubt, and some very deep questions and societal critiques that wouldn’t be too out of place on an Extol album.… Continued →

Furnace Fest Band Reunions FINAL Round Up, 2023

In honor of the greatness of a Festival that brings much joy to so many, I’m compiling a short longer list of recent band reunions announced for Furnace Fest 2023. This Fest has had a tumultuous past couple of years in light of the horrors and inconveniences Covid has brought to so many and yet they’ve persevered to cobble together an insane experience with an ongoing commitment to quality and fan adoration. While I haven’t been able to attend in either the past or more recently, I’m there in spirit.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Extol - Inferno

I listen to metal rather sparingly, but I love this song. When 1:10 kicks in, I feel like I’ve been transported to medieval times, and it makes me feel freaking epic. The drums sound like horses trotting while they pull their chariots, and the guitars bring to mind knights battling under a glow of flames. Rumor has it that drummer David Husvik recorded his parts without using a click track (but don’t quote me on that). While Extol’s most recent album was released in 2013, members of the band have been involved in other projects like Azusa, Fleshkiller, and Mantric.… Continued →

Mantric entering the studio in April

The prog metal act Mantric has announced they will be entering the studio in April. For those who don’t know who Mantric is, they are the members of the band known as Lengsel, formerly of Solid State Records. The band formed in 2007 in Oslo, Norway. The band has hosted all the members of Lengsel, David Husvik from Extol, and Anders Lidal of Benea Reach. Mantric is currently independent. The band released an EP and a full-length in 2015 and have released the vinyl for them in July last year.… Continued →

Fleshkiller Announces New Vocalist

Fleshkiller has announced that they have a new vocalist. The band started last year as a supergroup with members Ole Børud (Extol, Schaliach) and Peter Dalbakk (Vardoger, Schaliach) started the project and later added on Drummer Andreas Skorpe Sjøen. On January 10, 2017, Børud went to Facebook with a video of good news and bad news. Dalbakk is no longer apart of the band, as he is busy with life, but the band announced his replacement. The band has announced that Elisha Mullins of The Burial will be taking over vocals.… Continued →

Metaphysical Monday: "Undeceived" Beauty

Ok, it’s time for another series, don’t you think?  This article is the first in a series of what I would call “Classic Christian Albums with an Incredible Message.” First up in this series is an album that for a long time I considered to be the best Christian metal album of all time.  Heck, I kinda still feel that way.  And that album is “Undeceived” by Extol.  I would assume that most IVM readers are at least somewhat familiar with Extol, but just for the fun of it, I’ll do a short recap on the band before I get into the beauty of the album.… Continued →
