Song of the Day: The Blamed - 1200 Stares
By the time Give us Barrabbas came out (the band’s 7th album), The Blamed had already gone through at least 4 different genres: punk rock, crossover thrash, hardcore punk, and punk metal. Now they were dabbling in experimental post-hardcore, which, for my money was their most successful rendering of noise to date. “1200 Stares” starts off with a punishing, repetitive riff, and then we welcome some gang shouts: “We won’t stop what we start!” There’s an urgency in the cry that beseeches one to pay attention.… Continued →

Song of The Day: Unashamed - Everlasting Father
I was listening to this Unashamed song the other day through one of those Daily Mix Spotify Playlists that they so graciously create for me each day and I was brought back to a different time in my youth. So much anger, rage, and hope all in one song. It’s amazing to think that an artist can channel such aggression while at the same time harnessing a profound sense of love and hope derived from a Faith in God that is bigger than oneself. “Everlasting Father” appeared on the band’s 2nd full length release, “Reflection”, released in 1996 on Tooth & Nail Records.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Hit the Deck - Heads You Lose
I’m a sucker for this style of hardcore–really fast, short songs, with equal parts melody and anger thrown in for good measure. For some reason, this subgenre didn’t have nearly as much of a following in Christian circles as their secular counterparts, making Hit the Deck stand out even more. They released one full-length on Facedown imprint Strike First Records, and had a couple of demos as well, all of which can be found as digital downloads if you know where to look.… Continued →

Thrice Announce 15th Anniversary Tour for Landmark Album, Vheissu
Thrice have just announced plans for a 15th anniversary tour in honor of their landmark album, “Vheissu”. Vheissu originally released in 2005 via Island Records that was met with a heavy dose of critical acclaim and a bit of negativity from the rabid early years fan base. For me it was a beautiful, musically rich and engaging, endearing album that has stood the test of time. I still remember hearing the song or two on a Burnout game and being so psyched for the band. Regardless of what you think of their 3 prior full lengths up until 2005, this album really set the pace for what was to come.… Continued →

REVIEW : 2Minute Minor - Snake That Ate It's Own Tail
I usually like to have some Kenny or Dolly playing on the turntable in the background as I start writing a review. It gives me the inspiration I need. NOT, but now that I have your attention I must point out that the opening track to this album comes blazing off the starting line at full speed. It’s a skull crushing track and the epic start of an album that brings back that late 80s hardcore punk vibe, and although I didn’t experience that era live, the videos and stories people tell bring it to life.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Lights for Nero - The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Weapons Inspectors
Sadly, I only got to attend Cornerstone Festival once. I planned out my schedule in advance: hardcore here, punk rock there, metal over here, all sprinkled with alternative, indie rock, and goth too. If you’ve ever been to the festival, you’ll remember the countless numbers of flyers and leaflets for shows happening that week. One of the most mysterious and interesting was for a band I’d never heard of called Lights for Nero. Although I knew next to nothing about them, that flyer convinced me that I didn’t need to be anywhere else that afternoon.… Continued →

In what appears to be a complete surprise, the band LIFELONG are working on their new music. It appears to be that debut full length everyone has been patiently waiting for. Featuring former members of the band Confide, Lifelong took a decidedly more spiritual turn mixed with heavy melodic hardcore and pure passion meant to move people. If you’ve been hungry for the next generation of heavy spirit filled hardcore and fill the void left from the departure of Sleeping Giant, then Lifelong are perfect for you.… Continued →
The Blamed - Overwhelming Love (New Song)
The Blamed return with their 7th full length effort titled “The Church is Hurting People”. Campaign contributors have all received an early release of this 12 song effort. Check out the new song “Overwhelming Love”, below. The album is a perfect combination of that unmistakable heavy Blamed sound mixed with punk rock elements, industrial touches, and just an all around energetic, passionate experience sure to bring a smile to any fan of The Blamed. This album marks a return to the sound found on those early albums like “21”, “Frail”, “Again”, and “Forever” but even if you loved “Isolated Incident” and “Give Us Barabbas” you will find something to appreciate here.… Continued →

Song of the Day: 2Minute Minor - Bottom Feeder
If you’ve been following hardcore at all in the last 5 years, you probably already know about this Chicago “positive hardcore” band. Reflecting a PMA approach to lyrics, which includes things like unity in diversity, straight edge, veganism, and faith, the band churn out revivalist true school hardcore punk classics with great fecundity. This short track’s opening riff reminds me of the glory days of Descendents, and yet vocalist Wiley Willis seems to be drawing inspiration from H.R. of Bad Brains. Check it out and let me know what you think.… Continued →
