Song of the Day: Waking Ashland - Edinger

Two thousand and five was a very strong year for Tooth & Nail Records, as they released classic albums from Anberlin, Mae, Terminal, and Emery. Another impressive album, though overlooked, was Composure by Waking Ashland. The San Diego four-piece created some seriously catchy indie/piano rock tunes, and “Edinger” proves this point 14 years later.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Number One Gun - This Holiday

The North Pole Project (2008) wasn’t supposed to be a Number One Gun album. Rather, this was once the name of vocalist/guitarist Jeff Schneeweis’ solo project in the aftermath of Number One Gun’s breakup. In any case, The North Pole Project is a beautiful indie rock anthem. Not only did Schneeweis play every instrument on the album, but he also produced and mixed it. In these songs, he goes beyond some of the margins of the band’s past work, and this is best exemplified by closing song “This Holiday.”… Continued →

Song of the Day: Starflyer 59 - We're the Ordinary

Remember “Cooler Than Me” by Mike Posner? That song used to be really cool in 2010 and was popular enough to be played at shopping malls. But maybe, perhaps, you thought yourself cooler than Mike Posner, despite his single having a lot of pizzazz and swagger. Fair enough. Well, I hate to break it to you, but Starflyer 59 is actually cooler than both of you. “We’re the Ordinary,” taken from The Fashion Focus (1998), is cool enough to freeze a hipster shopping mall on a blazing summer’s day.… Continued →

Introducing: Strange Her

The guys in this band contacted me to share their new music. At first I was a little hesitant probably due to the name itself but then I listened and was instantly blown away. Strange Her are an explosive indie rock band that would please fans of As Cities Burn, House of Heroes, Emery, The Classic Crime, Anberlin and maybe even a little Silversun Pickups and Funeral for a Friend. Good stuff and uplifting. Songs of substance. Their new album “A Marginal Sea” is out soon and you can check out the new music video for the song “The Scarlet Cord”, below.… Continued →

REVIEW : Leem of Earth - Chapter 1, Chapter 2, and Chapter 3

Atmospheric, floating, literary and lush. Leem of Earth has completed their trilogy with the June 7th release of Chapter 3,  the third EP in their belletristic series: Chapter 1, Chapter 2 and Chapter 3. In all three efforts, the band from Pensacola, Florida, creates a fragile wall of sound that hearkens between the fuzz and soundscapes of 90s 4AD shoegaze bands and the ethereal charm of Mazzy Star, The Sundays, Cocteau Twins and The Innocence Mission.

Song of the Day: Stavesacre - Gold & Silver

I’m starting a new feature here at IVM that’ll focus on a beautiful, important, and defining song for a particular band. Let’s start this feature off right and put the focus on the music of Stavesacre, particularly the song “Gold & Silver”. I remember 20 years ago hearing this album (Speakeasy) which had this almost “ballad” like track named “Gold & Silver” then being struck in the heart heavily by it’s somber melodies, inspired lyrical delivery, and that unmistakable voice of Mark Salomon. This is beyond just a typical ballad you’d hear in a grocery store, shopping mall, etc.… Continued →

Joel Piper - As You Find Me (and more new music)

Joel Piper has been quietly releasing new music through digital networks. Joel not only drums/sings bgv for melodic hardcore band Lifelong but also has drummed for bands like Confide, Olivia The Band, and Dismissed back in the day. He also has another project called “Avery Pkwy”. His new solo music takes an introspective turn and dives into worship territory. It’s somber, it’s honest, and it is uplifting. Check out a couple new tunes below and find his music on your digital networks of choice. These songs are being released through Joel’s new label/brand “Iconic Nation”.… Continued →
