Song of the Day: Maybe Today: Mary (Tomorrow Gone)

This Missouri melodic emo/screamo band released one EP back in 2002. One of the members joined a band I saw live called Story of the Year after the band disbanded. This catchy SOTD I found through a site called Freerock1 back in the day which played the first Underoath releases along with numerous artists I found out about. Check out the remnants of the site here:   http://freerock1.faithweb.com/

2nd Single Released from new Good Saint Nathanael album

“Gravity” is the second single from the forthcoming I Write the Songs I Need full-length album from indie folkster Good Saint Nathanael. The single still speaks to past traumas songwriter Nate Allen has endured, but there’s clearly now some distance and perspective gained as the songs from the new album are lighter than 5 years ago. “Gravity” is now available for streaming or download. Additionally a video for the song has been released as well. Both can be found on the artist’s Bandcamp page: https://goodsaintnathanael.bandcamp.com/track/gravityContinued →

Song of the Day: Johnny Q. Public - Body Be

Welcome to the 1990s, the decade of alternative rock, grunge, flannel, and a time when MTV still played music videos. While the Christian music scene had tons of alternative rock bands, few were as effective as Springfield, Missouri’s Johnny Q. Public. The band found the right combination of distortion, melody, noise, and big rock hooks (but not too big) to make a huge impact on the music scene. They released two albums, 1995’s Extra-Ordinary (for Gotee Records) and 2000’s Welcome to Earth, which was also on Gotee but licensed to the mainstream Roadrunner Records.… Continued →

Song of the Day: D.O.N. - Burnin' Down the House

So my very first SOTD was from one of my fave bands DighayZoose. D.O.N. aka Degradation of a Nation was comprised of dudes who were also in Prophets on Vacation, DHZ & their later incarnation Hot Pink Turtle. DON is obviously hxc punk/thrash. Check out the webzine Christian tape underground f& Matthew Hunt’s Youtube channel for more hard to find Christian music.

REVIEW : Puddleglum - Where the Wondering Got Us

This album came out last October, but I was only recently made aware of it when guitarist/vocalist Craig Phillips reached out for coverage, just before moving to Eurasia to work overseas. Although released on Roxx Records, Where the Wondering Got Us is a distinct departure from the label’s usual heavy metal roster. On the contrary, Puddleglum have a sound that revels in reminiscence of the 1990s. It’s what one might call ‘slacker rock.’ It’s fairly simplistic alternative rock, or maybe just rock and roll. The songs, musically speaking, feel lazy though not necessarily in a bad way.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Destroy Nate Allen - B**bie Bar

Destroy Nate Allen is a fun, energetic band that mixes the simplicity and energy of punk rock with the acoustic sounds of folk, making for an interesting take on folk-punk. Quirky but sincere lyrics and vocal styles combine with straight-forward messages–usually on subjects other artists don’t want to touch–make for both a challenging and entertaining listen. Take “Boobie Bar” for instance. On the one hand it’s a crude song whose title I had to censor, just so it doesn’t get picked up by filters. On the other hand, the intent behind the song is just about as pure as it gets: Don’t go down to the boobie bar If you want a real relationship, you won’t get far Don’t go to that boogie bar The song comes from their 2012 album, With Our Powers Combined.… Continued →
