I’ve been a fan of Starflyer 59 since the affectionately titled “Silver” (officially self-titled) released in 1994. So when offered the chance to interview Jason Martin in advance of their new album Lust for Gold, I jumped at the chance. 1. Lacey Sturm – Kenotic Metanoia: This November Lacey Sturm released her first album in nearly 8 years. To say it was worth the wait is an understatement. This low key, somber indie rock dream sequence of a song titled “The Ballad of 54” by the band The Lost Chorus just dropped on digital networks and it’s an absolute winner. It’s unlike most stuff out there. The cool thing is that this supergroup of sorts features collaborations between Andy Zipf and members of Stavesacre and Project 86. It almost takes on this movie soundtrack vibe with haunting vocals and melodies that have this dark feel of sorts. It’s good stuff and definitely worthy of listen after listen.… Continued →

Emerging from the original wave of Spirit Filled Hardcore (or SFHC) came southern California’s No Innocent Victim, AKA N.I.V. In contrast to their SFHC peers like Unashamed, Strongarm, and Overcome, who often integrated metallic influences that were becoming more popular in hardcore, NIV stuck to their old school roots with a “Loud Fast Rules” mentality. In fact, their old school approach to fast and heavy hardcore played a part in sparking a revival of the style, which eventually evolved into “tough guy hardcore,” essentially an update of that old school sound with added breakdowns and heaviness.… Continued →

Andrew Schwab and his long running hard rock/metal band – Project 86, just announced a very special 25th Anniversary celebration. The 3 Night Memorial Day Event will take place in Nashville, TN. and will feature 25 songs from the vast discography P86 has in their arsenal. Andrew Schwab and Project 86 have just made their debut 1998 “Self Titled” album available once again for streaming/digital purchase. The album has been offline for a number of years probably due to some offense with the song “Independence?”. This album put the Orange County, CA. band on the map in 1998 and by the time of “Drawing Black Lines” in 2000, this band’s mark was clearly felt. I was lucky enough to witness the band’s first few shows back when Ethan Luck was in the band and they had a very heavy, aggressive, RATM influence.… Continued →

Ethan Luck is a veteran. This seasoned musician and songwriter has been playing on albums for more pretty much all of his entire adult life. He has worked with nearly everyone from Pax (before the ‘217’), Project 86, The Dingees, Value Pac, OC Supertones, Demon Hunter, Relient K, recently as touring musician with Kings of Leon and of course his solo work. The subdued electronic soundscape is the perfect soundtrack for any film, rainy day mood, and life event. Ryan Clark and Randy Torres know how to clothe you in a moody, electronic wrap cloaked in mystery and uniqueness. I can honestly say there are hardly any other “bands” with this sound in the little music scene we frequent.
