September 18, 2024
This controversial acoustic punk artist is a one man band named Derek Zanetti. He can be compared to Destroy Nate Allen which is a fun act to see live. Beware, the song does use the A word towards the song’s end, but it talks about Christians who do not act like Jesus called us to act. The song literally challenges the listener to think about the opposites of who we can be. Most of us interact with people every day. Who do you want to be known as?… Continued →

Song of the Day: Slechtvalk: Paralyzed By Fear vs To Praise the Unpraised
The new Netherlands Slechtvalk hits hard. If you have never heard of this band think Holy Blood vs Crimson Moonlight. The name is Dutch for the bird peregrine falcon by the way. The band will release their long awaited “At Death’s Gate” on October 31, 2024. While checking out this new track, recollect this 2000 Viking metal worship song.

Song of the Day: Jagged Doctrine - So Inspired
This industrial/rock/metal band has been making music since 1996 and has created a slew of albums with varying degrees of electronic elements in their sound. Some albums have had an inclination towards straight industrial, whereas others more hard rock/alternative metal.
“So Inspired” is from the band’s early era, dating to 1998 and was included on a number of compilations from both Blacklight Records and Flaming Fish Music. There are a couple of different versions of the song available. This version is taken from the I Wear the Mask album.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Vardoger - Call Your Name
“Unblack” metal can be hard to classify. Many do not like the term, but Vardoger could fall under that style of music. The band has gone over numerous personnel changes since its start in 1994. Check out the song lyrics which elude to the struggle of pressing on for the prize that Philippians 3:14 talks about.
And by the way, let us remember those affected by the 9/11 attacks. Let’s pray for the Holy Spirit to work on all of our hearts that we may call on Jesus when we struggle with the various sins that can take their toll on our relationship with YHWH.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Eva O- Panting For Love vs Audio Paradox -Grace One
Controversial deathrock artist Eva Ortiz has a complicated past & present, but decided to become a Christian for a few years. Panting for Love was the first song I heard from her on a “Christian” show from the college I was attending at the time while I was still in the military in Columbia, South Carolina. Eric Clayton (Saviour Machine) produced the album & the industrial rock band Audio Paradox provided the instrumentation. Both these releases were from 1999 also. AP are probably known most for this song’s appearance on the Flaming Fish Records compilation Electro Shock Therapy.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Abandoned Pools - Sublime Currency
Most know Tommy Walter aka Abandoned Pools from the Tooth & Nail release. However, he released lots of music beforehand with the mainstream band Eels & the moniker actually stemmed from 2 other names before it involved into AP. This SOTD was actually the 3rd single released from the album of the same name. Abandoned Pools is currently working on their 6th release & their Kickstarter project started August 6th, 2024.

Song of the Day: Isaiah Robin - Dear Atheist
This sure to be controversial song is from a rapper who has released a lot of tunes over the past few years. Per the Holy Culture site, “Isaiah Robin is an artist whose heart is solely for God. He makes music to lift you Spiritually and bring you closer to the Lord. Lyrics filled with revelation he writes as he is led, a true disciple of our Lord & savior Yeshua Hamashiach.” Check out these thought provoking lyrics below & also his media including his podcast.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Homonovux - ¿Y Si Fuera Cierto?
The Christian punk/indie/whatever scene isn’t limited to the United States. I can think of relevant bands from literally every inhabited continent, which is a truly wonderful thing. Punk band Homonovux call Mexico home, specifically the Yucatan region.
They’ve released two EPs since forming a few years ago. Their musical inspiration comes primarily from 90s punk rock (new school punk, skate punk, and a little bit of pop-punk too), but their lyrical inspiration is the message of salvation. This point is made very clear on their Bandcamp page (https://homonovux.bandcamp.com/… Continued →

Song of the Day: Snail On a Plate - A Moment of Clarity
This disbanded Finnish metal band released 1 EP Energystorm & this SOTD on a compilation which also featured HB, Essence of Sorrow, & a few others that I have seen around the Christian circles. Appears the band consisted of siblings & a couple of friends. Check out the live version also.

Song of the Day: Kingdom Cowboy - He's Enough
Yep, this SOTD is a country gospel song on a punk/metal website. But, the message in this song is exactly what we need to hear. God is there always including when we sin & mess up. He is quick to forgive & is always wanting us to come back to Him. Listen to the song lyrics as they are straight to the point. Also here is a great Bible verse.
Hosea 6:1-3
“Come, let us return to the LORD. He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Say-So - Mercy Me
Alternative/folk/pop duo Say-So comprised married couple Jim and Kim Thomas. They had actually been making music together for over a decade when their eponymous debut was released in 1997 for Organic Records. The album featured a fresh take on folksy, rootsy, alternative pop-rock that was ‘light’ enough to appeal to fans of CCM, yet unconventional enough to appeal to listeners with more alternative-leaning tastes. The band’s sound sat comfortably with artists like Sixpence None the Richer (especially their earlier material), Rich Young Ruler, and Five O’Clock People.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Memphis May Fire: That's Just Life vs Need To Be
MMF is a crossover catchy metalcore band from the mainstream into the “Christian” scene. Usually you see vice versa. They have been working on new material & have seen lots of radio play in recent years. Also, Matty Mullins released 2 worship albums & also has stepped up to replace long time Anberlin vocalist Stephen Christian. Their latest release Necessary Evil is heavy, but these 2 songs of the day elude to our Christian faith. Check out the following lyrics & their whole catalog.
I know how it feels to feel alone The king of my own fears, I never leave the throne And I’ve been searching for a place inside my soul Where all my demons can’t find me when I go “Pull it together, ” they say So I keep hoping for better days I’d be lying if I said that I was fine Cause I feel pain sometimes that I cannot describe So do I raise my fist and curse up at the sky Or do I close my eyes and realize, that’s just life? … Continued →

Song of the Day: Bon Voyage - I Just Wanna Be With You
Indie pop duo Bon Voyage was a collaboration of Jason Martin (Starflyer 59, and about a dozen others) and his wife Julie on vocals. The project was somewhat accurately described as “Starflyer with female vocals,” which is not inaccurate though not really complete either.
Whereas SF59 added layers and layers of guitars and fuzz, Bon Voyage stripped things back to the pop essentials. Julie’s vocals are akin to Julee Cruise, most famous for her work on the Twin Peaks soundtracks.
The band released three albums for BEC and/or Tooth and Nail, and we haven’t heard from them since 2008.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Northlander - Heavy Fruit
Oregon’s Northlander is an offshoot off one of my fave metalcore bands Fallstar. In fact, think of Fallstar if they did a rock ballad & you have this band, which is not a bad thing at all. Chris’ voice is so unique that you can easily pick him out of the tons of metalcore bands out there. Fallstar is also releasing singles & working on a new release to be put out this fall. Check out their new songs Watermelon Blood & Rooftops.

Song of the Day: The Faith - Outshined
This rarity hit Christian rock charts in 1996 per an e-book I recently bought that covers Christian rock radio from 1983 until 2002 when the chart first started. It has become my pastime to review all the music that has evolved into what we have today. I had never heard of this band and the music imho is unmemorable. From my search, it looks like the record label only released 2 projects with the other being an AC artist. This SOTD is the one that went to radio & reminds of the quirky bands that Christian rock had to offer in the late 90s/early 2000s.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Possession - Have No Fear
Possession was a thrash metal band (with speed metal, black metal and death metal tendencies) from Kansas. They released one full-length album and 2 EPs in the mid-90s (as well as a 2-disc compilation of all recordings in 2020), and despite their innovative, genre-bending sound, managed to stay very underground. To evade a controversy with secular metal label Metal Merchant–and some alleged wrongdoing on the part of the label–Possession self-released their recordings, to much critical acclaim but to no commercial success.
Ironically, what made them a listener’s and critic’s favorite, yet kept them in the underground, was precisely their unique take on extreme metal.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Maybe Today: Mary (Tomorrow Gone)
This Missouri melodic emo/screamo band released one EP back in 2002. One of the members joined a band I saw live called Story of the Year after the band disbanded. This catchy SOTD I found through a site called Freerock1 back in the day which played the first Underoath releases along with numerous artists I found out about. Check out the remnants of the site here: http://freerock1.faithweb.com/

Song of the Day: Ilia vs Zahna - Last Night vs Underneath
I missed out on seeing Ilia live, but got the chance to meet & see Zahna (Suzy Martinez) a couple years back. This was always going be one of the hardest SOTDs to pick from a relatively short catalog. Ilia has had so many awesome songs that they are very hard to deem as personal favorites. I chose to go with their earliest incarnation of the band as Ilia changed vocalists 3 times until Zahna came aboard for the final lineup. Check em out if you haven’t already.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Sever Your Ties - Adoration vs Captive
I was given the Safety in the Sea cd recently from this band I have known about for quite some time. Thank you Eli! Anyways, this article showcases 2 of my fave songs from them. Captive though hits hard with me especially with the following lyrics. We probably all have felt this way at some point, but now we are not alone with our thoughts and struggles as our Heavenly Father is here to help us through!!!
So here I am, waiting with my perfect thoughts But they’re all dead and wrong This isn’t what I expected This isn’t what I had in mind, but still I can’t move on It’s been so long since I felt loved
It’s been so long since I cared This world has nothing to offer This world is full of despair I was full of glass You can see right through Push me down I’d break Until I saw you It’s easy to believe what you want to When this world holds captive our hearts There’s something in the way that binds you It keeps us torn and apart I can feel what it’s like My fellas I won’t lie I can feel, So here I am, I can feel something inside But it is not my own, it’s not my own I wish I could see my future, see how everything unfolds ‘Cause now I’m not alone, I’m not alone

Song of the Day: Forever Changed - Encounter
This top-notch emo band came to us from Florida (members called both Tallahassee and Orlando home). They released two singles and two full-length albums in the short span between their formation in 1999, and calling it quits in 2006. But that’s not the full story.
Forever Changed stood out from the seemingly limitless pack of faith-based emo bands in the late 90s/early 00s, in a number of ways. They were incredibly musical–complex arrangements, fitting production, and capable instrumentation. And their lyrics/songwriting skills matched the music. They were open and bold in expressing their faith, but achieved the rare feat of not sounding trite, preachy, or platitudinous.… Continued →

Song of the Day: The Tri-Star Embodiment - Erase
This Californian modern metal band I personally learned about through the Dead2Self radio site when they had a metal sister site before it combined a few years back. Song of the Day: Anathallo: Don't Kid Yourself You Need a Physician
This indie experimental rock band is not exactly my cup of tea, but they do have at least 2 things going for them. Their sound features a full band including many different instruments. The 2nd is one of the band members joined the band Fun. which became immensely popular. Anyways, I have always dug this SOTD.

Song of the Day: Images of Eden - Here Comes the Sun
I’ve been following this band for several years now. This Beatles cover has found it way onto mainstream charts & as of the time of this writing (24 July 2024) is sitting at 65/100 which isn’t too bad for one of the first concept progressive hard rock “Christian” bands to have made it this far. Check out their whole catalog that goes back to 2001.

Song of the Day: Focal Point - Neglected
Legendary hardcore band Focal Point, from Northern California, is well-known not so much for the music they created (tragically), but for the groups that had their origin in the quintet. Training for Utopia, Demon Hunter, Nyves, and Low and Behold all trace their origins back to Focal Point at least in part. As important as those connections are, it’s a shame that too few actually remember the music of Focal Point, as it’s probably my favorite of all the aforementioned.
They arrived on the scene late in the “new school hardcore” movement of the early 90s as hardcore was becomingly increasingly more metallic, and yet hadn’t fully shifted into metalcore, which would happen a year or two after Suffering of the Masses dropped.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Showbread: I Think I'm Going To See You vs I Am Horrible at Processing Rejection

Song of the Day: Lambs & Lions - Rebel Hymn of Grace
This new oi/street punk band from Thumper Punk records is a great band akin to Hanover Saints & the like. Their lyrics are very anthemic for our Christian faith. HM has a great write up oon them if you want to know more here: https://heavensmetalmagazine.com/index.php/2024/06/17/lambs-and-lions-release-hymns-of-grace/
Check out some of the song’s lyrics below

Song of the Day: Judean Radiostatic - Travelling the Path of Flux
So I’ve been on an industrial kick lately. The following site is a great tool to find out more on the subject complete with tons of artists who have delved into the sub-genres: https://web.archive.org/web/20110915162856/http://automatapedia.com/index.php?title=All_Bands . Anyways, Judean Radiostatic is my pick this time around. I personally found out about the project through the defunct website FreeRock1. Also, check out Richard’s Youtube channel as he is well versed in all things Christian industrial.… Continued →

Song of the Day: sintax.the.terrific - Moonlighting
Most of us first heard sintax.the.terrific as a member of hip-hop supergroup Deepspace5, a massive rap cypher featuring members of Mars Ill, Labklik, The Pride, and Ill Harmonics. The group’s debut hit stores in 2001 via Uprok Records (the hip-hop sublabel of Tooth & Nail Records).
sintax’s first solo album released in 2006 for Illect Recordings, interestingly enough, run by the former head of the short-lived Uprok, Josh Niemyjski. That is, of course, if we don’t count his 2003 indie release.
What’s cool about “Moonlighting” is the autobiographical take on being an independent Christian rapper by night, while being a real-life lawyer by day.… Continued →
