Song of the Day: Cowboys & Monsters - Junkhole

This artist played an experimental eclectic mix of various electronic/hip hop music. The people/person behind the project that released 2 full lengths are anonymous. This song seems to be a remix of a song Sackcloth Fashion released called Jungle on an N’Soul compilation .

Song of the Day: Midnight Orchestra - Chaos

This year’s last SOTD post from me is from a project that can be very hard to determine which genre it falls into. Helmed by Mick Rowe, brother of Jamie from Guardian/Kalamity Kills and who also worked with the arena rock band Tempest, Mick wanted to work a project that would be different than all else. Both LPs Land of Nod & Digital Saviour have elements of goth, hip hop, rock and pop. CCM rock & rhythmic radio shows picked up a few songs including God, I’m a Lie, War Dance & The Cage.… Continued →

Song of the Day: L.A. Symphony - Next

One of the larger, more legendary cyphers in Christian hip-hop, L.A. Symphony came to us from where else but Los Angeles. They emerged in the late 90s with a few 12″ singles and a full-length album on member Flynn Adam Atkins’ own independent label Eartube Empire, via which Flynn had also released a full-length solo album earlier. The group’s breakthrough came in the form of 2003’s The End is Now for Gotee Records. I had the privilege of booking/hosting the group for a youth event in Atlanta in the mid-2000s.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Braille - This Year

Rapper Braille (born Bryan Winchester) has been making hip-hop since at least 1998, first as a solo artist and then additionally as a member of Lightheaded (featured in an earlier Song of the Day), Acts 29, and most recently the worshipful project Beautiful Eulogy. The Portland-based rapper has released just under a dozen albums, including independent releases, a Japanese import, and a collaboration with Symbolyc One, not including his work in the aforementioned cyphers. Although I’d heard of him through his association with Syntax Records, it was his 6th album Box of Rhymes where I was first introduced to his music.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Shane Newville - Roll Out

Remember Syntax Records, the label that put out awesome underground hip-hop like RedCloud, the Night Owls compilations, and Sackcloth Fashion? Well, sometimes the label released music from other genres, too. This included rock bands like Green Olive Tree and Olivia the Band, and on other occasions, electronic music. Today I’d like to share a song from Formless (2007) by Shane Newville, titled “Roll Out.” It is seven minutes of D&B bliss and perfect for an epic high speed car chase, should you find yourself in such a predicament.… Continued →
